What the scholarship covers
A full Chinese Government Scholarship is widely reported to cover four things: tuition, accommodation (or an accommodation allowance), a monthly living allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance.
| Level | Monthly living allowance (commonly reported) |
|---|---|
| Bachelor | CNY 2,500 |
| Master | CNY 3,000 |
| Doctoral | CNY 3,500 |
Confirm in your award notice
Allowances and what is included are set by the scholarship body and your university, and published sources disagree about extras such as a one-off settlement payment. Plan on the monthly allowance only until your award notice says otherwise.
Type A and Type B: which route?
| Type A (bilateral programme) | Type B (university programme) | |
|---|---|---|
| How you apply | Through HEC's portal and the CSC online system, in the national round | Directly to a Chinese university that offers CSC places, and through the CSC online system |
| Who nominates you | HEC shortlists and nominates Pakistani applicants | The university does. HEC is not involved |
| Deadline | One national deadline. Last cycle: 5 January 2026 | Set by each university, so they vary |
| Your responsibility | Follow HEC's notice and meet its tests | You manage your own application and correspondence |
Type A has a single national deadline and a nomination step. Type B gives you more control over the university and professor but needs more self-management. Read the current HEC notice to see exactly what is open this year.
Are you eligible?
These are the criteria as published in summaries of HEC's and the CSC's rules. Confirm them against the current notice before you apply.
- You are a Pakistani national. Dual nationals have been reported as not eligible.
- Bachelor: 12 years of education (intermediate, FA, FSc or A levels) and under 25.
- Master: a 16-year bachelor's degree and under 35.
- Doctoral: an MS or MPhil and under 40.
- Your degree must be complete by the closing date, and you must be in good health.
- You do not hold another scholarship.
- English-taught programmes need evidence of English proficiency. Chinese-taught programmes need a specified HSK level.
Entry tests
HEC's process has reportedly used tests such as the USAT for undergraduates and the HAT for postgraduates, and CSC undergraduate applicants now need the CSCA. Which tests apply to you depends on the current notice, so check it as soon as it is published.
Step by step: from scholarship hunt to admission notice
- 1
Hunt the scholarship
Decide whether you are targeting the CSC Type A route through HEC, the Type B route through a university, or another funded programme.
- 2
Check which universities are under your scholarship
Each scholarship type lists participating universities and programmes, including which are taught in English. Build a shortlist of programmes that fit your degree and subject.
- 3
Build a clear CV
One to two pages: education, projects or research, publications if any, skills and language level. Keep it factual and consistent with your documents.
- 4
Choose your university and department, then email the professor
For master's and PhD places, a professor who agrees to supervise you usually makes the difference. See the section below on how to write the email.
- 5
Attend the interview
A professor may arrange a short interview, often online. Know your study plan and your research interests.
- 6
Get the acceptance letter
After a positive interview, the professor can provide an acceptance letter that supports your application.
- 7
Submit your application
Apply on the relevant portals with your documents: the CSC system, plus HEC's portal for Type A or the university's portal for Type B.
- 8
Receive the pre-admission letter
After a few weeks, you may receive a pre-admission letter from the university. It does not guarantee your scholarship.
- 9
Wait for the scholarship lists
Scholarship results are published later. Keep your phone and email active and watch the official channels.
- 10
Receive the admission notice and JW201 or JW202
Once you are admitted, the university issues the admission notice and the confirmation form. You then move to the X1 visa stage.
How to email a professor
A good email is short, specific and clearly written for this professor. Generic mass emails are easy to spot and usually ignored.
- A clear subject line: your level, research area and name, for example "Prospective PhD applicant, [research area], [your name]".
- Two sentences on who you are: your degree, university and results.
- Why this professor: mention one or two of their papers or projects and how your interests connect.
- What you are asking: whether they would consider supervising you for the scholarship intake you are applying to.
- Your CV and a short study plan attached, nothing else unless asked.
- A polite close with your contact details, and a follow-up after a reasonable gap if there is no reply.
Don't invent a connection
Only mention work you have actually read. Professors can tell when an email is generic or copied, and claims about papers you haven't read can end the conversation.
Deadlines and when to start
Last cycle, the HEC portal closed on 5 January 2026 at 4 pm Pakistan time, and direct university applications ran on their own timetables, reportedly into March and April. HEC has not yet announced the 2027 round.
- Start the slow documents now: the police certificate and its apostille, recommendation letters and the English proficiency letter.
- Shortlist universities and programmes, and begin contacting professors.
- Watch HEC's scholarship page and the CSC's announcements for the opening date.
- Keep your documents ready to upload so you can apply the day the portal opens.
Why applications fail
- Missing or late documents, often the apostille or recommendation letters.
- A study plan that is vague or copied.
- Contacting professors too late, or with a generic email.
- Choosing programmes that don't match the applicant's degree or language level.
- Documents that don't match each other: names, dates or results.
Questions answered
What is the difference between Type A and Type B?+
Type A is the bilateral route where HEC nominates Pakistani applicants through its own portal and the CSC system. Type B is the university route, where you apply directly to a Chinese university and manage your own application. Deadlines and responsibilities differ, so read the current notice.
When is the deadline for the CSC scholarship?+
The HEC portal closed on 5 January 2026 for the last cycle, and university deadlines varied. The 2027 dates have not been announced yet. Check HEC and the CSC as early as possible, and prepare your documents now.
Does a pre-admission letter mean I have the scholarship?+
No. A pre-admission letter shows the university is willing to admit you, but the scholarship is decided separately, and the lists come later.
Do I need a professor's acceptance letter?+
For many master's and PhD applications, an acceptance or supervision letter strengthens or is required for the application. Check the programme's requirements.
Can I apply to more than one university?+
Check the rules of the route you are using. Some routes limit the number of universities you can choose, so confirm this in the current notice before you apply.
What does the scholarship not cover?+
Flights, visa and document costs, and personal expenses beyond the allowance. Confirm what is included in your award notice.
