The route in two stages
Everything in the China study route falls into two stages, and the order matters. You cannot start the visa until the first stage is finished, because the visa needs documents that only the university can issue.
| Stage | What happens | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Admission and scholarship | Find a scholarship, choose universities, prepare your CV and study plan, contact professors, apply, then receive the admission notice and the JW201 or JW202 form | The professor and university, and the scholarship body (CSC) for funded places |
| 2. Visa and departure | Apply online for the X1 student visa, submit your passport at the visa centre, collect it, travel, then convert the visa into a residence permit within 30 days of arrival | The Embassy of China |
Why you can't skip ahead
The X1 visa application asks for the university's admission letter and a printout of the JW201 or JW202 confirmation form, which the university submits online. Without them, the visa step cannot begin.
Scholarship or self-funded?
Most Pakistani applicants aim for a scholarship, but self-funded study is also possible. The choice changes your documents and your form.
- Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC): reportedly covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly living allowance and medical insurance. You receive a JW201 form.
- Self-funded: you pay the university's fees yourself and receive a JW202 form.
- For the X1 visa, the Embassy asks for proof of a scholarship, or for financial resources of US$2,500 per academic year, with the supporter's closing bank balance covering the whole study period.
Never pay for a "guaranteed" scholarship
Nobody can guarantee a CSC place. Scholarship lists are decided by the scholarship body and the universities. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed admission, and never send money to a personal account for a scholarship or an admission letter.
A realistic timeline
The dates below follow last year's cycle and are indicative. HEC has not yet announced the 2027 dates, so treat this as a planning guide and check the official portals as soon as they open.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Now to December | Choose your level and subject, shortlist universities, take any required language or entry tests, start the slow documents (police certificate, apostille, recommendation letters) |
| Early January | Last year the HEC portal for the scholarship closed on 5 January 2026. Have your application ready before the date is announced |
| January to April | Direct applications to universities (Type B) have their own deadlines, which last year reportedly ran through March and April |
| Mid-year | Pre-admission letters and scholarship results. A pre-admission letter does not guarantee a scholarship |
| Summer | Admission notice and JW201 or JW202, then the X1 visa application |
| Autumn | Travel, register at the university and apply for the residence permit within 30 days of arrival |
What it costs
A scholarship removes most study costs, but the application itself still has costs. Confirm each amount on the official source before you pay, because they change.
- Chinese visa fee: holders of Pakistani ordinary passports have been exempt from Chinese visa fees. You still pay the visa centre's service fee, reported at about PKR 13,200 for regular service. Confirm the current amount with the centre.
- Police certificate: the fee depends on how and where you apply. Published figures range from about Rs 350 at a counter to Rs 522 or more online with service charges. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs apostille is separate.
- Medical examination: the cost depends on the hospital.
- Flights, and any language test fees.
- Visaroo's own fee, if you use our service: from ¥1,000, with a ¥2,000 dual combo covering both stages. See the service page.
Mistakes that cost applicants a year
- Starting after the deadline opens. Police certificates, apostilles and recommendation letters take weeks.
- Sending the same generic email to dozens of professors. Professors notice, and many do not reply.
- Using fake, edited or arranged documents. This can lead to a permanent ban from entering China.
- Trusting a seller of guaranteed scholarships or admission letters.
- A medical form with a missing hospital seal or photocopied lab results, which can make it invalid.
- Booking flights before the admission notice and visa are in hand.
Where to go next
Start with the scholarship guide, then use the documents checklist to begin the slow items, and come back to the X1 visa guide once you hold an admission notice. If you want a second pair of eyes on your profile, our China service covers both stages.
Questions answered
Can I study in China for free?+
A full Chinese Government Scholarship reportedly covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly allowance and medical insurance, so many scholars study at very little personal cost. Self-funded study is not free, and a scholarship is competitive and never guaranteed.
Which visa do I need to study in China?+
For study longer than 180 days you need the X1 visa, which you convert into a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. Study of 180 days or less uses the X2 visa, which cannot be converted into a study residence permit.
Do I need IELTS or HSK?+
It depends on the programme. English-taught programmes need evidence of English proficiency, and some accept a letter from your department. Chinese-taught programmes require a specified HSK level. Check the requirement of the programme you choose.
Is there an age limit for the scholarship?+
Published summaries of the scholarship criteria give limits of under 25 for bachelor's, under 35 for master's and under 40 for doctoral applicants. Confirm the current limits in the official notice.
How long does the whole process take?+
From starting your applications to arriving in China is typically most of a year, because scholarship results come months after the application deadline and the visa step follows the admission notice.
Can I do this without an agent?+
Yes. The scholarship portals, university applications and the visa application are all free to use yourself. An adviser can save time and catch mistakes, but nobody can improve your odds by paying for access.
