Portugal Visa from Pakistan (2026): Why It Takes Longer and How to Plan

Portugal's official processing time is 15 days, but applicants from Pakistan regularly wait far longer. Here is how to plan around it, what Portugal expects in your file and how much money to show.

Portugal is worth the planning, as long as you start early enough.

Portugal is a favourite for first-time Schengen travellers, and it has one well-known drawback from Pakistan: time. The official window is the standard 15 days, but real timelines are often much longer, and applicants who leave it late are the ones who run into trouble.

How and where to apply

Portuguese applications from Pakistan are submitted through VFS Global centres in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore on behalf of the Portuguese Embassy in Islamabad. You complete the application, attend your biometric appointment at the centre and submit your documents there. Confirm the current payment methods when you book, since some centres are cash-only.

Why Portugal takes longer than the official 15 days

Although the Schengen standard is 15 days, the Islamabad embassy has been running much slower for Pakistani applicants, with timelines closer to 60 to 90 days reported in practice. We can't give you a guaranteed turnaround, and nobody can. What you can control is when you apply.

  • •Apply at least three months before you travel.
  • •Attend your biometric appointment promptly. Delays here push everything back.
  • •Keep a copy of every document you submit in case the embassy asks for clarification partway through.
  • •Use cancellable bookings, since your dates may need to move if processing runs long.

Applying too close to travel is the single most common way a perfectly good Portugal application ends in a refusal: the dates lapse before a decision arrives.

How much money should you show?

Portugal's reference amount is €75 for each entry plus €40 for each day of your stay, unless your board and lodging are guaranteed. For a ten-day trip that means a figure in the region of €475 for the stay itself, before flights. Showing pre-paid or guaranteed accommodation changes the calculation, so say clearly how your stay is covered.

What does it cost?

The adult visa fee is €90. The VFS centre charges its own service fee on top, quoted at €38 per application, and it has been collected in cash at the centre. Confirm the current amount and the accepted payment method on the VFS Portugal page for Pakistan before you travel to the centre.

Documents to prepare

  • •Completed application form and a passport valid beyond your trip with at least two blank pages.
  • •A recent photograph meeting the Schengen specification.
  • •Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 for the Schengen area.
  • •Six months of stamped bank statements in your own name, and proof of income.
  • •An employer letter with approved leave, or business registration documents if you are self-employed.
  • •Proof of accommodation for the whole stay, a day-by-day itinerary and a return flight reservation.

Why Portugal applications are refused

  • •Applying too close to the travel date, so dates lapse before a decision is made.
  • •Details on the form that don't match the bank or employment documents.
  • •Insufficient evidence of accommodation for the full length of stay.
  • •Weak ties to Pakistan and unclear intent to return.
